Hakgojae Gallery is plased to participate in Art Basel Online Viewing Room: 2021. Our presentation features a curated selection of works by KIM Gil-hu (b. 1961, Korea). KIM received significant attention from the art world by being awarded the 11th Korean Art Critics Association Artist Award in April. In 1999, KIM burned 16,000 pieces of his works. It was his way of declaring his volition to rid of his ways from the past and pursue an entirely new picture screen. In 2013, he also changed his name from Kim Dong-gi to KIM Gil-hu (金佶煦), in line with his attempt to transform his identity as an artist. KIM Gil-hu believes that "the core of artistic expression is ridding the desire to fulfill the artist's ego through his artwork." His belief is that one must return to the pure mind of a child and practice the "state when labor is in accord with play and when one is free from obligations and solely acts for oneself" to reach a genuine artistic expression.
'The Night of Chaos' indicates the primitive state that precedes all beings. KIM endeavors to forget conventions and return to the essential mind. His use of black, which symbolizes the beginning and end of all things, as the main color traces back to this very context. KIM's paintings entirely reveal the painter's gestures and breath. He focuses on the act of painting itself rather than a subject.
KIM Gil-hu uses a large flat brush to create his picture screen. He does not bear a specific subject and paints spontaneously while completely entrusting his body to the paintbrush. The form, abstractly disassembled, leaves room for expansive interpretation. According to the artist, his forms are similar to "when clouds seem like a figure but scatter by the wind and resemble animals or plants." His picture screen "maintains an ambiguous state - not figurative nor abstract; furthermore, both figurative and abstract."
In the recent works presented in the exhibition, hues such as bronze, copper, and blue meld with one another on a black and white background. Black, the dominant color in the picture screen, is a symbol of nothingness. Black discloses both beauty and ugliness and is also a hue that projects KIM's own chaos and fear. After burning his works in 1999, KIM deserted himself from the outside world for a Shile and immersed himself in achromatic paintings. After continuous efforts, his black picture screens transformed into an embracing color that encompasses possibilities of all colors. This transformation was achieved by endlessly contemplating and exploring his identity amid gloomy reality.

KIM Gil-hu rids convention and returns to the essential mind. His first solo exhibition at Hakgojae Gallery, The Night of Chaos, opened in July 2021. The artist, who lives and works in China and Korea, received attention from his solo show at Whitebox Art Center (Beijing) in 2014, curated by Wang Chunchen, who was the artistic director of the Chinese pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale. He was also awarded the 11th Korean Art Critics Association Artist Award in April. This prestigious award is granted to artists who have outstanding artistry and originality. KIM painted The Wise Man (2014) while he was living in Beijing. The picture screen captures the serene Buddha who gifts humankind with enlightenment. The Buddha is offering the flower to the world. KIM changed Buddha's lotus with a lily, which has great significance to the artist. Lilies symbolize KIM's happy childhood memories of times spent with his mother in the garden. The lily, portrayed like a traditional oil lamp, denotes hope and enlightenment, emitting light in the darkness.

Affective approach, world of mind, expressiveness of color
Yoon Jin Sub
